Military Might, Political Fights
Politicians love to show off their military spending, especially when it comes to unveiling shiny new projects. Take the aircraft carrier with no aircraft—billions spent on a massive ship built to launch planes, but when it comes to actually buying the planes, that’s where the budget cuts hit. The carrier sits there, all kitted out with a runway and high-tech gadgets, but it’s basically just a giant, expensive boat with no purpose. Meanwhile, the same politicians who approved the ship are slashing the budgets for the planes it was supposed to carry, hoping nobody notices the giant floating metaphor for wasted potential. It’s classic politics: build something impressive, then hope no one asks what it actually does.
