Angela Rayner is a British politician serving as Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government since 2024. A Labour MP for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015 and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party since 2020, she rose from a working-class background, having left school at 16 while pregnant, later becoming a care worker and trade union official. She has held key positions in the Labour Party, including Shadow Secretary of State for Education, and was instrumental in the party’s resurgence. Rayner Under Fire as Bin Strike Crisis Deepens and Union Powers Grow

Angela Rayner faced criticism over her plan to grant more powers to unions, despite failing to stand up to striking bin workers in Birmingham. The strikes, which have been ongoing since March 11, have been prolonged by union members who rejected a council proposal to end the crisis. The situation has led Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to warn that unions now run the country, and Rayner's plan for a workers' rights law will hand even more powers to them. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham also warned of the potential for the strike to spread to other areas if councils continue to make low-paid workers pay the cost of their decisions.
