Jeremy Hunt is a senior British Conservative politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from October 2022 to July 2024, and has been the Member of Parliament for Godalming and Ash (formerly South West Surrey) since 2005. Born on 1 November 1966 in Kennington, London, Hunt was educated at Charterhouse School and later at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he earned a first-class degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Before entering politics, he co-founded the educational publishing company Hotcourses and spent time teaching English in Japan. Hunt has held several key cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport (2010–2012), Health and Social Care (2012–2018), and Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (2018–2019). As Chancellor, he focused on fiscal responsibility, presenting budgets in 2023 and 2024, and implementing measures aimed at reducing inflation. Martin Cosser, a father who lost his 17-year-old son Charlie to knife crime in July 2023, was praised by MP Jeremy Hunt as the most "determined and formidable" campaigner he has ever met. Cosser has set up a charity to educate young people about the dangers of carrying knives and has been working with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s knife crime task force. He hopes to get knife crime discussion onto the school syllabus, starting in primary schools, and has had meetings with the minister for policing and crime prevention who has endorsed his efforts.
