Just Stop Oil is a UK-based environmental activist group dedicated to ending the use of fossil fuels and promoting urgent action against climate change. Founded in 2022, the organization focuses on direct action, civil disobedience, and protests to pressure the UK government to halt new oil, gas, and coal projects. The group believes that continued investment in fossil fuels is not only harmful to the environment but also exacerbates the ongoing climate crisis, leading to extreme weather events, ecological destruction, and social instability.

During the first lap of the Silverstone race on July 3 last year, climate activists entered the tarmac after a crash triggered a red flag. A court heard that their actions posed a serious risk to Formula One drivers and race marshals. Bethany Mogie, David Baldwin, Alasdair Gibson, Emily Brocklebank, Louis McKechnie, and Joshua Smith were later tried for conspiracy to cause public nuisance and found guilty at Northampton Crown Court. Police released footage of the dramatic moment they invaded the track, with one protester heard shouting, "This is a climate emergency." The court also revealed that five of them had attempted to glue themselves to the live race track.
