Nigel Farage is a British politician, broadcaster, and former leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), known for his key role in advocating for Brexit. Born in 1964, Farage started his career in commodities trading before entering politics in the early 1990s. He co-founded UKIP in 1993 and served multiple terms as its leader, using his populist and often controversial rhetoric to push for the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. Farage was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1999 to 2020, where he gained a reputation for fiery speeches criticizing the EU. His leadership was instrumental in forcing the 2016 Brexit referendum, which resulted in a vote to leave the EU, significantly altering the course of British politics.
Reform Leader Nigel Farage makes announcement on UK immigration policy
- Thursday, 24 April 2025
Nigel Farage has announced that, if Reform UK wins the next general election, he will create a new minister for deportations to tackle Britain’s ongoing migrant crisis. Speaking in Dover, Farage emphasized that discussions around illegal immigration are largely ineffective unless the UK withdraws from the European Court of Human Rights and repeals the 1998 Human Rights Act, which he views as obstacles to controlling immigration. He also promised that under a Reform government, there would be no further migration-driven population increases, noting concerns over a significant rise in the number of people leaving Britain. Farage explained that the proposed minister for deportations would operate within the Home Office but as a distinct department, ensuring focused action on removing illegal migrants. He also warned that new staff would need to be recruited because, in his view, many current Home Office employees would likely resist implementing Reform UK's policies.
