President of Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the President of Ukraine, serving since May 20, 2019. Before entering politics, he was a comedian, actor, and producer, best known for starring in the TV series Servant of the People, where he played a schoolteacher who unexpectedly becomes president—a role that foreshadowed his real-life political career. Running on an anti-corruption and pro-reform platform, Zelenskyy won the presidency in a landslide victory against incumbent Petro Poroshenko. His leadership has been defined by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Zelenskyy has gained international recognition for his resilience, rallying global support for Ukraine while refusing to flee Kyiv, famously declaring, "I need ammunition, not a ride." His presidency has strengthened Ukraine’s ties with the West, and he continues to advocate for Ukraine’s sovereignty, European integration, and military aid to defend against Russian aggression.
Zelensky Urges Trump: See War's Human Cost Before Pursuing Deal with Russia
- Monday, 14 April 2025

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has invited Donald Trump to visit Ukraine ahead of any deal with Russia to end the war, saying "Please, before any kind of decisions, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead." This comes after a Russian missile attack on Sumy killed 34 people and injured 117 others. The US has been pursuing an end to the war through negotiation under Trump, but it remains to be seen if he will accept Zelensky's invitation.
