Councillors Face Court Over Unpaid Council Tax Bills in North-East England

At least eight court summons have been issued to councillors across north-east England for non-payment of council tax in the past three years. Councillors in Newcastle and Durham had been taken to court for not paying their council tax bills since 2022, with four court summons issued by Newcastle City Council totaling £2,204 and two by Durham County Council totaling £1,204. The councils have refused to name the councillors in question, citing privacy concerns.

Christian Candy has won a £2 million refund from HMRC after a lengthy court battle over stamp duty on his £68 million Georgian mansion. The billionaire property developer purchased the mansion with his brother Nick and paid stamp duty before gifting it to his brother, who was then told he must pay stamp duty again. After paying nearly £2 million too much in tax, Candy received a refund of £1.92 million plus £270,000 in lost interest from HMRC.
Isle of Man Mulls Healthcare Tax to Fund Rising Medical Costs

Proposals for an independent healthcare tax on the Isle of Man have been defended by Treasury minister Alex Allinson, who believes it's a "realistic" way to generate revenue. The levy could raise up to £28m per year and would be deducted from people's incomes via the existing tax return system. Allinson acknowledged rising health costs, stating that the increased pay costs for doctors was forecast to cost an extra £2.4m, which would need to be funded somehow.

Krause has indicated she will participate in a deferred resignation program and step down from her post on April 28, reportedly due to disagreement with the administration's direction for the agency.
