Reading, Writing, and Red Tape

Politicians love to talk about education like they invented books whilst standing proudly at podiums, declaring that “our children are the future,” right before they cut the school budget to buy more flags. They pass laws demanding students score higher on standardized tests, even though half of them think "Pi" is just a dessert and "critical thinking" is a liberal conspiracy. They promise to "listen to teachers," then ignore every actual teacher in a 50-mile radius and consult their cousin Dave who once substitute-taught gym in '98. At this rate, kids will graduate knowing how to recite campaign slogans but still wondering who this "Pythagoras" guy was and why he loved triangles so much.

A large display at Kent State University featuring a bloody image of President Donald Trump’s head with a pike through it has sparked outrage. The artwork, created by an art student, was part of an exhibition for the Center for the Visual Arts and included the sentiment "We only have to get lucky once." In response to the controversy, the university confirmed that the student agreed to remove the display and the work was brought to a resolution with faculty support.

The university's president, Alan Garber, stated that "no government should dictate what private universities can teach." In response, the education department accused Harvard of having a "troubling entitlement mindset" and claimed the university was not upholding civil rights laws.

The Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in funding to Harvard after the university refused to comply with a list of demands aimed at combating anti-Semitism on campus. The Department of Education cited Harvard's "troubling entitlement mindset" and lack of commitment to upholding civil rights laws, stating that the school is not taking anti-Semitic incidents seriously enough.

Coventry University Accused of Prioritizing Property Over People Amid Financial Crisis

Coventry University is facing a £59.3m loss between 2023-24, prompting job cuts of over 60 full-time positions. The university's leaders claim they are "transparent" about their financial position and are implementing change programs to reform the organization. However, union representatives argue that the university is not considering alternative solutions, such as selling underused buildings, instead opting for job cuts. The university owns many properties, including student accommodation, which are currently empty due to a decline in international students.
