Lawmakers, Lawbreakers

When politicians get caught committing crimes, it's like watching a toddler deny eating chocolate with their entire face smeared in it. There they are, standing in front of a podium, sweat glistening under the lights, swearing they “had no idea” that embezzling millions and hiding it in a fake charity called “Save the Puppies Foundation” was wrong. Their excuse? “I was hacked,” “It’s a smear campaign,” or the classic, “This is all news to me,” as if their signature didn’t appear on every shady document like a kid writing their name on the wall with permanent marker. And yet, despite overwhelming evidence, they strut back into office like nothing happened—because in politics, apparently, crime pays... and also gets you a book deal and a Netflix docuseries.

Labour MP Tulip Siddiq Faces Arrest Warrant Over Corruption Charges in Bangladesh

An arrest warrant has been issued against Labour MP Tulip Siddiq by a court in Dhaka over corruption charges. She is accused of pressuring her aunt, Bangladesh's deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, to allocate three plots of land for her family members, all based in the UK, as part of an exclusive residential development. The warrant was issued after the Anti-Corruption Commission submitted a charge sheet against Siddiq, and she has been given until April 27th to appear before the court and seek bail; otherwise, a trial can start against her in absentia.

Family Denies Faking Afghan IDs to Claim Asylum in UK: Trial Set for February

A family of four, consisting of Gurbakhsh Singh, Ardet Kaur, Guljeet Singh, and Kawaljeet Kaur, appeared in court to deny immigration charges. The family is accused of pretending to be Afghan nationals to illegally claim asylum in the UK when they arrived at Heathrow Airport in December 2023. They have already twice failed to obtain visas as declared Indian citizens and are set for a seven-day trial on February 2 next year. Each member of the family denied two charges: arriving in the UK without entry clearance and entering the UK without a passport, failing to possess an immigration document to establish their identity, nationality, and citizenship.

Labour Accused of 'Utterly Shameful' U-Turn on Grooming Gang Inquiries

Labour has been accused of making an "utterly shameful" decision to water down a pledge to investigate grooming gangs targeting young girls. The accusation was made by Sir Trevor Phillips, former chairman of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, after Jess Phillips, minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, failed to confirm that five inquiries would take place as previously announced. Instead, Ms Phillips proposed a flexible approach that may include local victims' panels or audits rather than full independent inquiries.

Mayor's Unrequited Love Letter Campaign Lands Him in Court

Graham Roberts, 72, the mayor of Whitehaven, Cumbria, was convicted of stalking after sending unwanted love letters to a barmaid he had become infatuated with, but accidentally sent them to the wrong woman. He included his business card in the letters, which confirmed him as the town's first citizen. The recipient took the letters to police and Roberts was arrested at his home and charged with stalking without causing fear.
