Pride and Pronouns

The LGBTQ community encompassing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer individuals continues to be at the forefront of major cultural and political discussions around the world. While progress such as marriage equality and anti-discrimination laws has been achieved in many countries, recent years have seen a rise in political backlash, especially around transgender rights, healthcare access, and education policies. In the United States, the UK, and parts of Europe, debates over gender identity, participation in sports, and inclusive curricula have become highly charged issues. Pride events and advocacy efforts remain vital, both in celebrating hard-won rights and in pushing back against new waves of legislation and rhetoric aimed at curbing LGBTQ freedoms. Despite these challenges, the LGBTQ movement remains resilient, continuing to advocate for equality, visibility, and the right to live authentically and safely.

Labour Ministers Plot to Defy Trans Ruling Amid Fury and Controversy

Labour ministers, including Sir Chris Bryant and Dame Angela Eagle, have been secretly discussing ways to defy the Supreme Court ruling that men who change gender are not legally women. The discussions took place on WhatsApp, where they expressed private fury over the ruling and planned to hold a meeting to "decide a way forwards" and "organise". Additionally, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch wrote to the Cabinet Secretary calling for an investigation into Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson’s statement that supported the protection of single-sex spaces based on biological sex.

Lib Dem Council Spends £13,000 on Gender-Neutral Toilets Amid Rising Council Tax

Kingston Council, run by Sir Ed Davey, spent £13,400 making a toilet block at Latchmere Recreation Ground in south London gender neutral. This comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex, which may bar transgender women from female bathrooms and sport. The Equality and Human Rights Commission chairwoman suggested providing third spaces, such as unisex toilets or changing rooms, to accommodate trans people.

Maggie Chapman Rallies Dundee Crowd: Trans Rights Are Human Rights

  • Saturday, 19 April 2025

On April 19, 2025, "Stand up for Trans Rights" took place at Dundee’s Slessor Gardens following the Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers. Maggie Chapman, Scottish Green MSP for Northeast Scotland, co-hosted the event and delivered a powerful speech affirming her solidarity with the trans and non-binary communities. She condemned the Court’s decision as a disgrace to all those fighting for human rights and criticized the funders of the legal challenge for their lack of real concern for women’s rights. Chapman argued that the money could have been better spent supporting essential services like abortion access and highlighted that trans rights and women’s rights are not in conflict. She promised to take the fight for trans rights to the Scottish Parliament and rejected demands for an apology over the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, saying instead that trans people deserved an apology for the way their lives have been politicized. Reaffirming the Scottish Greens’ commitment to trans rights "today, tomorrow, and always," Chapman ended with a rousing call: "When trans rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!" Her speech was met with loud applause, and organizers invited attendees to share their personal stories, building a strong atmosphere of resilience, solidarity, and community spirit.

Biden Judge Blocks Trump's Transgender Passport Rule

A Joe Biden-appointed federal judge, Julia Kobick, blocked the Trump administration's policy banning non-binary people from using an X on their passports to identify their gender. The policy was enacted through one of President Trump's executive orders, which narrowed the definition of sexes and prohibited gender transition. Judge Kobick ruled that the government failed to demonstrate a substantially related important governmental interest in its actions and approved the ACLU's motion for a preliminary injunction, staying the action while the lawsuit is litigated.
