When Bad Policies Meet Loud Opinions

No one planned on becoming a protester, yet here they were—thousands of frustrated citizens marching through the streets, waving signs like “If I wanted this much nonsense, I’d watch reality TV.” The government really thought they could pass this absurd policy without consequences? Not today. Among the crowd, someone in a banana suit chanted passionately, though it was unclear if they were protesting the policy or just really upset about the state of public WiFi. Either way, democracy was alive, mildly chaotic, and strangely entertaining.

Turkey Crackdown: Journalist Arrested Amid Widespread Detentions and Muzzling of Media Freedom

Turkish photojournalist Yasin Akgul was arrested at his home by police while covering anti-government protests. He was accused of taking part in illegal rallies and marches and faces charges. Akgul believes he was targeted because of his profession and that the aim is to intimidate journalists and prevent them from reporting on the unrest. Seven journalists were arrested in dawn raids, including Akgul, who works for AFP news agency. The arrests have sparked fears for democracy in Turkey, where around 2,000 people have been detained in two weeks, many of whom are students or members of Generation Erdogan.
