However, tensions between the two countries date back to 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatist movements in eastern Ukraine including Donetsk and Luhansk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Russia's Easter truce "nonsense" as Russian forces continued shelling and assaults along the front line, despite the 30-hour truce starting on Saturday evening. According to Zelensky, Ukrainian reports showed 59 cases of Russian shelling and five assaults by Russian units in the first six hours of the truce, with a total of 387 instances of shelling and 19 assaults up until midnight on Saturday. Zelensky stated that Russia was attempting to create the impression of a ceasefire while continuing isolated attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.
