Ksenia Karelina, an American ballerina, has returned to Los Angeles after being imprisoned in Russia for months. She was arrested in February 2024 during a visit to her family and sentenced to 12 years in prison for making a $51 donation to Ukraine. Her fiancé, Chris van Heerden, campaigned tirelessly for her release and eventually turned to former President Donald Trump, who negotiated her freedom in a prisoner swap deal. Van Heerden expressed frustration with the previous administration's lack of progress in securing Karelina's release, stating that they only made progress after turning to Trump and the new administration.
