Bin Day Bureaucrats
The local council is like a mysterious secret society, except instead of world domination, they’re mostly concerned with where you park your car and what colour your front door is. They’ll approve a 12-story block of flats next to a Grade II listed cottage, but heaven help you if you want to convert your shed into a yoga studio—planning permission denied. Parking rules change more often than the weather, and the signs are written in a dialect only ancient druids can read. Councillors argue passionately over flower bed layouts while ignoring the sinkhole swallowing half the high street. It’s democracy at its finest: petty, confusing, and somehow always two hours behind schedule.
Long Waits End: Sheffield Council Tackles Tax Helpline Delays
- Tuesday, 29 April 2025
Sheffield City Council is working to reduce long waits for callers to its council tax helpline, which has been plagued by delays of up to an hour. Councillor Mohammed Mahroof reported that some callers have given up after being on the phone for 45 minutes or more before the line drops out. The council acknowledged that improving the service is a key priority and promised that improvements will start to be seen later this year.
