Bin Day Bureaucrats
The local council is like a mysterious secret society, except instead of world domination, they’re mostly concerned with where you park your car and what colour your front door is. They’ll approve a 12-story block of flats next to a Grade II listed cottage, but heaven help you if you want to convert your shed into a yoga studio—planning permission denied. Parking rules change more often than the weather, and the signs are written in a dialect only ancient druids can read. Councillors argue passionately over flower bed layouts while ignoring the sinkhole swallowing half the high street. It’s democracy at its finest: petty, confusing, and somehow always two hours behind schedule.
Whitehaven's Empty Shops: Councillor Urges Landlords to Take Action Amidst Growing Neglect
- Saturday, 19 April 2025
Cumberland councillor Joseph Ghayouba is frustrated with the neglect of empty shops in Whitehaven's town centre, calling on landlords to take action to stop properties from falling into disrepair. He is working with Cumberland Council to identify and engage with landlords to get them to tidy up their shops, citing poor conditions that deter potential tenants. While acknowledging that some landlords may struggle to let out the properties, Ghayouba believes many are left in a bad state that would require significant upfront costs for renovation.
