Bin Day Bureaucrats
The local council is like a mysterious secret society, except instead of world domination, they’re mostly concerned with where you park your car and what colour your front door is. They’ll approve a 12-story block of flats next to a Grade II listed cottage, but heaven help you if you want to convert your shed into a yoga studio—planning permission denied. Parking rules change more often than the weather, and the signs are written in a dialect only ancient druids can read. Councillors argue passionately over flower bed layouts while ignoring the sinkhole swallowing half the high street. It’s democracy at its finest: petty, confusing, and somehow always two hours behind schedule.
Councillors Face Court Over Unpaid Council Tax Bills in North-East England
- Friday, 18 April 2025
At least eight court summons have been issued to councillors across north-east England for non-payment of council tax in the past three years. Councillors in Newcastle and Durham had been taken to court for not paying their council tax bills since 2022, with four court summons issued by Newcastle City Council totaling £2,204 and two by Durham County Council totaling £1,204. The councils have refused to name the councillors in question, citing privacy concerns.
