Democracy: Now with More Leaflets!
Elections are that magical time when every candidate suddenly remembers your name, your dog’s name, and pretends to care deeply about the pothole outside your nan’s house. Leaflets multiply in your letterbox like rabbits on energy drinks, all featuring people who have never worn a hi-vis jacket suddenly posing in one like they’ve just filled in a thousand potholes personally. There’s always that one guy who runs as an independent with a manifesto that’s 80% about bringing back milk deliveries and banning cyclists. And no matter who wins, the bins still get collected late and the local duck pond remains mysteriously over budget.
Aontú Submits Bill to Grant Voting Rights in Presidential Elections to Irish Citizens in Northern Ireland
- Saturday, 19 April 2025
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has submitted a bill to allow Irish citizens living in Northern Ireland to vote in presidential elections in the Republic of Ireland. The party claims that over one million Irish people living in Northern Ireland are currently not eligible to vote, despite being Irish citizens and holding an Irish passport. Tóibín argues that it is the responsibility of the Irish government and Dáil to grant this right, rather than the London government or Stormont Executive. He believes that this change would allow the full Irish nation to vote as one for the first time since 1918.
