Democracy: Now with More Leaflets!

Elections are that magical time when every candidate suddenly remembers your name, your dog’s name, and pretends to care deeply about the pothole outside your nan’s house. Leaflets multiply in your letterbox like rabbits on energy drinks, all featuring people who have never worn a hi-vis jacket suddenly posing in one like they’ve just filled in a thousand potholes personally. There’s always that one guy who runs as an independent with a manifesto that’s 80% about bringing back milk deliveries and banning cyclists. And no matter who wins, the bins still get collected late and the local duck pond remains mysteriously over budget.

Hull and East Yorkshire Set to Elect First Mayor in May

On May 1st, voters in Hull and East Yorkshire will elect their first mayor for the Combined County Authority. The mayor's role is to chair the authority, providing vision and leadership, and make decisions on public transport, infrastructure, economic development, and regeneration. The position comes with significant power, including the ability to lobby the government for funding and secure investment for the region. The combined authority will receive £13.4m a year from the government for 30 years, and the result of the election is expected to be announced on May 2nd at East Riding Leisure Centre Haltemprice.
