Scandal at the Gates
Plebgate was a 2012 British political scandal involving Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell, then Chief Whip, who was accused of calling police officers "plebs" during an altercation at the gates of Downing Street. The dispute arose when Mitchell was allegedly denied permission to cycle through the main gate, leading to a heated exchange. The police claimed he used derogatory language, but Mitchell denied the allegations. The controversy led to his resignation, but subsequent investigations, including CCTV footage and conflicting police accounts, cast doubt on the officers' claims. The scandal exposed issues of police integrity and political-media relations, with one officer later convicted for misconduct.
