The Art of the Trade War

Trade wars are like awkward family feuds, but instead of yelling at Thanksgiving dinner, politicians slap each other with tariffs like they're in a passive-aggressive game of economic dodgeball. One country raises steel tariffs, another retaliates with a cheese embargo, and suddenly world leaders are arguing over dairy like it's a geopolitical episode of MasterChef. Meanwhile, politicians give dramatic speeches about "protecting national interests," which loosely translates to, "We have no idea what we’re doing, but it sounds patriotic." In the end, nobody wins—except maybe smugglers and black market avocado dealers.

Trump Tariff Threat: West Midlands Car Industry Faces Devastating Blow

According to Professor David Bailey, the West Midlands would be the UK region most severely impacted by Trump’s 25% import tariff on cars and parts going to the US. The region is home to major car manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Aston Martin, which have significant exports to the US market. One in four JLR cars are currently sent to the US, making it a significant problem for the industry.

UK Hits Back at US Tariffs as Trade War Escalates

Sir Keir Starmer expressed disappointment that Donald Trump ignored his pleas to spare the UK from US tariffs on steel. The PM said he will take a pragmatic approach to retaliation, while emphasizing that the UK seeks to negotiate an economic deal covering tariffs if successful.

Trump Tariffs Catch Aussie Officials Off Guard: Penny Wong Learns through Media Reports

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong admitted she first learned of the US imposing tariffs on Australian steel and aluminum through media reports, before being officially informed by the White House. She confirmed this while speaking to Nine's Today program, stating that it was not humiliating but rather expected given the Trump administration had previously said excluding Australia from the 25% tariffs during his first term was a mistake.

Canada Warns: 'Nobody Is Safe' from Trump's Tariffs

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly warned that "nobody is safe" from Donald Trump’s tariffs, citing his imposition of 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. She criticized Trump for leveling "unjustifiable" tariffs against Canada and trying to use economic coercion to annex the country. Joly also criticized Trump's changing justifications for the tariffs and threatened further measures.
